If anything inside is dead, the unit is scrap. If the cartridges are making good electrical contact with the carriage, you should only get the "press enter to align cartridges" message when you change a cartridge. The cartridges dicharge a small amount of ink every time you start a print job.
It has never worked but I didn't have time to followup on the problem until today. Removing the Scanner Tilt the scanner upward as if you are going to access the cartridges. I think I am through with HP - quality has really declined. The scanner will work thru Photoshop and Word if i request it, but when i try to use the "scan to" settings, i get the message that the "options not set".
